The Indian Ocean’s crystal blue waters are not a myth! The same mesmerizing waters of the Maldives can be found off the coast of Zanzibar, and the best way to experience them is by going for a cruise on a dhow boat.
A dhow boat is a wooden boat with a large triangular sail. These unique boats date back to 600 BC and were originally used for trading, fishing, and carrying cargo or slaves. They are said to have been invented by the Arabs or Indians and can be seen throughout Africa traversing the waters transporting people or cargo even today. Dhow boats come in a variety of sizes, however, for this experience the fishing boat style dhow is recommend. These boats can hold about two to three people, in addition to the captain, and are perfect for a quick off shore cruise.

During my time in Zanzibar, I stumbled across a young fisherman on the beach and asked if he would be willing to take me out on his boat. After some brief bargaining, the man agreed and told me that we would set sail at lunch the following day. The next day we met and I watched, from the shore, as the fisherman and the captain pushed the boat into the water and raised the sails. The captain told us to hop in and we were off.
The dhow boat is fascinating and takes skill to maneuver. The captain stood on the ledges of the sail that protruded out and over the ocean and managed the sails. He moved them strategically to catch the wind and keep us gliding through the waters. The water was as transparent as glass. At any point you could look down and catch a glimpse of the colorful marine life dancing below as we glided by.

Once we reached a steady speed the captain invited us to step out and stand on the sail’s ledges – this was the best part! Gripping the sail’s rope and the captain’s hand, I hoisted myself up and out on the ledge. Balancing myself, I watched as the water lapped beneath me and inhaled the salty spray that kicked up from the boat. A magical moment to be out on the Indian Ocean admiring its various hues of blue – this is the Instagrammable moment! We continued our sail up and down the coast line for about fifteen minutes before returning to shore. We thanked and paid the fisherman and were on our way.
Whether you find and bargain with a fisherman on the beach or book an official tour, a dhow boat cruise on the Indian Ocean is an activity not to miss while in Zanzibar.
