A Letter Encouraging Black Women to Travel …Everyday

Society and social media has conditioned us to believe that “traveling” means venturing to an exotic or luxurious destination. However, this describes only one of the many styles of travel. It does not take one to venture to the savannas of Botswana to have a life changing moment of self discovery or to feel emboldened to try something new. Travel is defined as moving from one place to another, with the place we are moving from, often time, being one in which we feel safe and comfortable. In other words, travel is anywhere we go outside of our usual comfort zone, and it is outside that comfort zone that we are forced to adapt, learn, change, and grow. Now, who wouldn’t want to do all that changing and growing while sipping a cocktail on a powdery white Caribbean beach. While that opportunity may present itself once or twice a year (maybe more for some) what about when we don’t find our selves somewhere abroad. Instead of only trying a new food, exhilarating activity, or befriending a stranger 1,000 miles from home, let us allow ourselves to travel outside of our comfort zone in our every day lives. Whether its indulging in nature, trying a new restaurant, or experimenting with an unconventional hobby let us push ourselves to travel everyday and explore the world around us, wherever we find ourselves in this world.
